Oceans in Crisis: Warming Nearly Doubles Since 2005

Published:

The EU’s Copernicus Marine Service reports that ocean warming has roughly doubled since 2005. Oceans cover 70% of Earth and regulate the temperature, yet they have suffered from human-caused global warming.

Ocean warming has increased continuously since the 1960s, but it has accelerated in the past two decades. The warming rate has increased from 0.58 to 1.05 watts per square meter, says oceanographer Karina von Schuckmann. According to the IPCC, oceans have absorbed 90% of greenhouse gas heat.

Marine habitats are suffering from this extreme temperature rise. In 2023, marine heatwaves in over 20% of the world’s oceans caused species migration, huge die-offs, and disturbances to ocean currents and nutrient distribution. Ecosystems, fisheries, and biodiversity are threatened.

Since 2008, marine heatwaves have doubled in frequency and duration. The Arctic Barents Sea is experiencing a constant maritime heatwave, indicating climate disruption.

Since 1985, ocean acidity has increased 30%, harming corals and oysters, which use calcium carbonate to produce shells and skeletons.

Our oceans, sentinels of a rapidly warming planet, need immediate protection.
