A broken tyre caused a double-decker school vehicle carrying 38 children and teachers to crash outside Bangkok, igniting. Due to sparks from the coach striking a metal crash barrier, the vehicle caught fire, killing around 23 people, including numerous children.
The tragedy occurred on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road as the bus returned from a school trip. Rescuers battled heavy black smoke to reach the imprisoned children in footage. Many casualties, aged nursery school to 14, were located in the back of the bus, where they had desperately sought to escape the fire.
Sixteen children and three teachers were hospitalized, while three teachers and 20 students are missing. The victims were terribly burnt and hard to identify, rescuers said. “Some of the bodies we rescued were very, very small,” said rescue leader Piyalak Thinkaew.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra offered her sympathies as officials searched for the bus driver, who may have escaped.
This horrible occurrence adds to Thailand’s 20,000 road traffic accident deaths, calling into question its road safety record. The fire’s cause is under investigation.
