10,000 North Korean Troops in Russia: What would a bold move look like in the good old Moscow-Pyongyang alliance?

Having been inked in June by President Putin and the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, this treaty is the end result of Moscow-Pyongyang cooperation which is stronger than it has been since the Cold War.

On Wednesday Russia’s Federation Council gave the green light to a new defensing treaty with North Korea which establishes a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership ‘ providing for mutual defense in case of aggression against any of the parties involved.

The treaty signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June is the closest Soviet-style partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang.

The pact’s approval came after the State Duma ratified it on 24 October and corresponds with the latest confirmation by Washington that 10,000 North Korean troops arrived in Russia’s Kursk region ready to enter Russia’s war against Ukraine.

This would be the first large scale engagement of North Korea other than the Korean War. Each of the Kremlin and Pyongyang has come out in broad terms to dismiss Western accusations of troop deployment saying their military cooperation is lawfully perchance.

This week, Putin met North Korean Foreign Minister Chloe Son Hui, who affirmed Pyongyang’s support for Russia’s campaign in Ukraine: “in the interest of the righteous struggle of Russia’s military and people to protect the rights of their sovereign state and its interests in security.”

At the same time, the officials of the United States and their counterpart in South Korea have expressed concerns over the technology transfer in nuclear and missile programs between Russia and North Korea.

On Tuesday, to clear matters of any doubt, Pyongyang fired short range ballistic missiles and, in the process, it showcased its military muscle in the middle of the US presidential elections.
