Hypersonic Missile Attack Sparks Urgent NATO-Ukraine Strategy Meeting

Published:

NATO and Ukraine are preparing for emergency talks following Russia’s use of a hypersonic missile to attack a military facility in Dnipro, central Ukraine. The missile, an experimental Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic weapon, represents a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict, now nearing 33 months.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the missile strike was a retaliation for Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles supplied by Western allies, including the US and Britain. In a televised statement, Putin boasted about the missile’s unmatched speed and capabilities, asserting that it could bypass advanced air defense systems. He revealed that further testing of these missiles, even in combat scenarios, would continue as necessary.

Ukrainian officials reported that the missile, traveling at Mach 11, carried six warheads, each releasing six submunitions upon impact. This prompted the Ukrainian parliament to cancel its session as a security precaution. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged global leaders to act decisively to prevent further escalation. He stressed the importance of making Putin fear the consequences of his actions and warned of the ongoing threat posed by Russia’s intimidation tactics.

“The world must respond firmly,” Zelenskyy stated. “We are already working on advanced air defense systems to counter these new risks and protect lives.”

Foreign leaders have also condemned the attack. The Czech Foreign Minister labeled it an “escalatory move” and called for increased air defense support for Ukraine, while Hungary’s Prime Minister raised concerns about potential direct involvement of American personnel in guiding Ukraine’s missiles, warning against underestimating Russia’s countermeasures.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that 60,000 Russian troops are stationed in Kursk, likely preparing further offensives to reclaim Ukrainian-held territory.

The missile strike is seen as a calculated effort to intimidate both Ukraine and Europe. However, NATO’s upcoming talks and continued Western support highlight a united front against Russia’s aggressive actions.
