The fully financed UN Ocean Fellowship 2025 in Portugal is currently accepting applications. The official application period for this short-term international fellowship, which will run from October 20 to 24, 2025, is now open. Up to 30 chosen fellows from around the world will participate in the five-day program (not including travel time).
Individuals from UN member states are entitled to apply, and there is no application fee. The fellowship seeks to unite enthusiastic people who are dedicated to addressing pressing ocean-related issues and provide them with the information and abilities necessary to promote change.
The Portuguese government and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) provide all of the program’s funding.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Candidates from UN member states are welcome to apply.
- intended for senior government representatives from underdeveloped nations who work in ocean governance, management, and policy.
- Heads or deputy heads of national ocean policy agencies are among the positions that qualify.
- Those in charge of ocean-related policy, such as ambassadors, may also apply.
- Candidates must be actively working for their government and intend to stay there for the long run.
- Because the training will be done entirely in English, proficiency in the language is necessary.
Benefits:
- Return International Flight: The fellowship pays for the participant’s round-trip economy class flight to Portugal and back.
- Local Transportation in Portugal: All program-related local transportation in Portugal will be planned and paid for, including airport transfers, transit to the event location, and any formal outings.
- Accommodation: Fellows will be provided with comfortable lodging for the whole duration of the program, from arrival to departure, in Portugal.
- Meals: During the program duration, breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served every day at the location or at neighboring eateries or motels.
- Daily stipend/per diem: During their time in Portugal, each fellow will receive a set daily stipend to cover incidental or personal expenses.
