The Keele University SURF Scholarship, which supports students from underrepresented or low-income backgrounds to undertake postgraduate courses in the UK, is now accepting applications from the Leverhulme Trust.
A living stipend at the UKRI rate, a £10,000 research allowance, and full tuition expenses for a Master’s and PhD are all covered by this fully financed scholarship, which supports a five-year academic journey. Leverhulme-funded Keele University’s Sustainable Rural Futures (SURF) Programme aims to produce a new generation of multidisciplinary scholars who are committed to solving contemporary rural issues.
People with low incomes and/or Black descent who reside in the UK are encouraged to apply for the program. After completing a Keele Master’s degree in the first year, chosen “Masters Plus” students will pursue a PhD for four years.
Eligibility Criteria :
- Candidates must have at least a 2:1 honors degree, or be on pace to get one.
In order to be eligible for the Masters Plus Scholarships offered by the Leverhulme Trust, applicants must either:
- own a mixed heritage that includes Black heritage, or be of Black African, Black Caribbean, Black Other, Mixed White and Black Caribbean, or Mixed White and Black African descent, OR
- have obtained a Special Support Loan or a full maintenance loan while pursuing their undergraduate degree.

Benefits :
- For five years, the Keele University SURF Scholarship offers complete financing, which includes a salary at the UKRI rate, four years of postgraduate research (PhD) tuition fees, and one year of Master’s tuition expenses.
- A £10,000 budget is also included with each scholarship to help with training and research. Scholars will also be financially supported to take part in cohort-building exercises.
