University of Basel NOMIS Fellowships 2026, Switzerland (Fully Funded)

Established on April 4, 1460, the institution of Basel is the oldest institution in Switzerland and among the oldest worldwide. Situated at the intersection of Switzerland, Germany, and France, it is home to some 13,000 students from more than 100 countries, including about 3,000 PhD candidates.

Three fully paid NOMIS Fellowships at eikones—Center for the Theory and History of the Image are currently up for grabs at the University of Basel, one of Switzerland’s top and most esteemed universities. Outstanding junior and senior scholars from a variety of fields, including the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, are eligible to apply for these extremely competitive postdoctoral and research fellowships.

Eikones has been a global center of excellence for studies on the theory and history of pictures since its establishment in 2005. The institute explores the historical functions and current significance of pictures as instruments of human cognition, communication, and cultural expression. For academics concerned with the epistemological, cultural, and symbolic aspects of visual representation, its interdisciplinary research environment offers the perfect setting.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A doctorate (Ph.D.) from an accredited university is required.
  • A track record of successful research with either
  • One academic work (dissertation, for example), or
  • Three peer-reviewed papers that have been edited into volumes or published in respectable journals.
  • must be conducting studies that examine how pictures function as models in artistic or scientific situations.
  • Applications may be submitted in either German or English, but fluency in either language is required.
