International students can now apply for the 2026 Japan Government MEXT Scholarship at Ritsumeikan University in Japan. This fully funded scholarship pays for tuition, travel expenses, visa fees, and living expenses with a stipend of almost $11,200. The Japanese government provides full-ride funding for the MEXT University Recommendation Scholarship. A Japanese university must suggest candidates to MEXT, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (Monbukagakusho), in order for them to be taken into consideration. MEXT Scholars are chosen based on their exceptional academic achievements and are expected to make valuable contributions to society while acting as intellectual and cultural links between Japan and their home nations.
Eligibility Criteria :
- must be a citizen of a nation with diplomatic ties to Japan (Japanese nationals are not eligible; dual citizens who intend to relinquish their Japanese citizenship may apply).
- must have been born on April 2, 1991, or later.
- must be in sound mental and physical condition.
- If chosen, they must be prepared to apply for a new student visa and go to Japan expressly to pursue their studies.
- must be able to go to Japan by the mid-September 2026 date set by Ritsumeikan University.
- must have a CGPA of at least 2.30/3.00, determined by the MEXT formula (the university will compute this; self-calculation is not necessary).
- For programs taught in English, candidates must either be proficient in CEFR B2 English or have finished the most recent English degree program.
