The UK’s Birmingham Global South Fellowship 2026–2027 is now accepting applications. Selected overseas researchers can spend three months at the University of Birmingham with this fully supported, short-term research fellowship.
The fellowship is intended to promote academic collaboration with eminent scholars in the UK and is targeted to early-career researchers from the Global South. Participants will be able to participate in ongoing academic initiatives, perform individual or collaborative research, and interact with knowledgeable faculty from a variety of disciplines.
Along with research experience, the program helps fellows build their academic reputations, broaden their professional networks, and experience a top-notch research environment. Additionally, it strengthens long-term academic ties by facilitating information exchange between institutions in the UK and the Global South.

Eligibility Criteria:
- In keeping with the fellowship’s emphasis on assisting scholars from developing and emerging regions, applicants must currently reside in a Global South nation.
- In their own country or region, candidates must be officially linked with an accredited university, research institute, or academic organization.
- Strong research skills and academic potential should be demonstrated by applicants by prior work, publications, or ongoing research projects.
- Since the program promotes knowledge exchange between universities in the Global South and the UK, a demonstrated interest in collaborative and interdisciplinary research is crucial.
- Since this collaboration is usually required for project development and selection, the majority of applicants are expected to find and acquire a host academic supervisor at the University of Birmingham before submitting an application.
Benefits:
- To make it simpler for chosen researchers to participate in the program, participants will receive a travel stipend of up to £850 to assist with international travel expenses to and from the UK.
- Throughout the fellowship, a £1,500 monthly stipend will be given to cover everyday necessities, food, and local transportation.
- During their time at the University of Birmingham, fellows will have access to on-campus housing, which guarantees secure, practical, and reasonably priced accommodation in a university setting.
