Tokyo Metropolitan University Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship 2026, Japan (Fully Funded)

Established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) and run by the Tokyo Metropolitan Public University Corporation, Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) is proud to offer the Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship Program 2026. The program offers both academic and financial support, enabling participants to fully commit to graduate studies and research in Tokyo. It is designed to draw outstanding international students.

The program strengthens TMU’s standing as a center of innovation and cooperation by bringing together bright students from all over the world, advancing Tokyo and the global community as a whole. TMU provides students with the perfect environment to succeed academically and professionally because of its robust academic programs, extensive global networks, and location in one of the most energetic cities on earth.

The scholarship provides complete tuition fees, monthly living stipends, overseas travel, and other support services to guarantee a successful academic journey for two years for master’s students and three years for doctoral students. The Tokyo Government’s budget, which is expected to be finished by March 31, 2026, must still be approved before enrollment in the 2026 program can begin.

Eligibility Criteria:

Academic Background

  • Master’s applicants must hold (or expect to hold) a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and be at least 22 years old at the time of enrollment.
  • Doctoral applicants must hold (or expect to hold) a master’s or professional degree, or demonstrate equivalent academic ability, and be at least 24 years old at the time of enrollment.

Institutional Affiliation

Applicants must be one of the following:

  • Currently enrolled in, or recently graduated (within one year) from, a university, research institute, government agency, or company located in:
  • South, Southeast, or East Asia
  • Tokyo’s sister or friendship cities/states (e.g., New York, Paris, London, Beijing, Seoul)
  • Enrolled in one of TMU’s international partner universities.
  • Currently in a Japanese master’s program with a valid “Student” visa.

Academic Performance

  • A minimum GPA of 2.30/3.0 (calculated according to TMU’s scale) is required.

Language Proficiency

  • Japanese: JLPT N2 or higher, or proof of equivalent ability.
  • English: CEFR B2 level or higher (e.g., TOEFL/IELTS), or completion of an English-medium degree.
  • Students must also commit to acquiring basic conversational Japanese before completing their program.

Future Commitment

Graduates are expected to:

  • Work in a Tokyo-based company, research institute/university, or public organization.
  • Build a Japan-friendly professional network that fosters mutual understanding and innovation.

Other Conditions

  • Must obtain a new “Student” visa (exceptions may apply).
  • Must be in good physical and mental health.
  • Cannot hold another scholarship that overlaps with this program.

Benefits:

Admission and Tuition Fees: Full exemption of admission and tuition fees for the entire study period—2 years for master’s programs and 3 years for doctoral programs.

Monthly Stipend: A living allowance of 150,000 JPY per month to support daily expenses and study needs.

International Airfare: A one-way economy class ticket to Japan at the start of studies and a return ticket upon program completion (subject to specified conditions).

Housing Support: Referral services provided through TMU’s partner company to assist in securing accommodation. (Students are responsible for covering their own housing costs.)

Examination Fee: Exemption from the entrance examination fee is required for admission.
