The University of Otago PhD Scholarships, which grant up to 153 fully supported doctoral awards each year for both domestic and international students, are currently accepting applications for 2026–2027. These scholarships offer a substantial living stipend and full tuition coverage for the full 36 months of study; extensions are not permitted.
One of the oldest and most prestigious research universities in New Zealand, the University of Otago was established in 1869. Through the program, scholars can carry out advanced research in a variety of subjects, including business, law, health sciences, and natural sciences, under the guidance of experts from across the world.
All year long, applications are accepted, and they are evaluated every three months (March, June, September, and November). Candidates are chosen based on their aptitude for research and academic achievement.
Eligibility Criteria :
- This fully financed PhD scholarship at the University of Otago is open to both domestic and international candidates from New Zealand.
- A master’s degree with at least 0.75 EFTS is required of applicants.
- Candidates must be submitting their initial PhD application to the University of Otago.
- Generally speaking, candidates should be pursuing their first PhD.
- International students need to achieve university grade requirements and have a solid academic record.
- Candidates must exhibit potential and enthusiasm in research.
- This scholarship requires a referral from the department head.
- Candidates must fulfill the university’s standards for English language competency, including test results or supporting documentation as needed.
- When applicable, all candidates must provide proof of their English competence.
